Fr Bountha Silaphet
Our brand new Kmhmú priest
The goal of every Catholic seminary is to present their graduates to the Bishop for ordination, enabling them to serve the Christian community. It is the same for the small seminary at Takek near the Mehkong River in south central Laos.
The rightness of this process was expressed by newly ordained Kunpah Bountha when he wrote:
Please pray for me as I begin my new life
as a priest in Laos.
Yours very sincerely in love and gratefulness
Fr Petro Silaphet Bountha
31 January 2011
Father Bountha's first steps in the active priesthood have not been easy. Communist Party officials made return to his own province in the north of Laos very difficult. In the face of this rough situation, both Father and his courageous Bishop Banchong continue to rally the Faith of the Catholic people who make up the Vicariate Apostolic of Luang Prabag.
The many jubilant families who turned out for the ordination at the seminary in Takek demonstrated how determined the Catholic Community throughout Laos is to bring honor to their priests.
The buildings of the Laos seminary and the numbers of seminarians may not rival those in other lands, but their strength of character, knowing the government's reception of Fr Bountha, makes their professors, like (Fr Phaiboon, who has twice spent long stretches of time with Richmond Kmhmú) continue to take the risks to teach them.
May the inspiration of the Martyrs of Laos from past times remain with our seminarians and the heroic parishioners they one day hope to serve.
